Job title: Dangerous Goods Specialist 

Location: Hybrid, 1 day a week in the office (Darlington, GB), flexible, depending on location. 

Role summary:

Join our dynamic team as a Dangerous Goods Specialist. Reporting to the Regulations and Compliance Manager, this role offers an exciting opportunity to bolster our regulations and compliance team. Your primary focus will be on providing invaluable support across the company for all matters related to dangerous goods compliance, business to business consultancy, and the provision of training materials. 

As part of our team, you’ll play a vital role in enhancing our dangerous goods validation software and training materials. We’re looking for someone with a strong grasp of current regulatory frameworks for transporting dangerous goods, especially by sea and road. And the ability to develop and maintain premium training materials. If you’re ready to make a difference in ensuring safety standards, this is the role for you! 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Monitoring DG regulations and communicating changes (internally and externally)
  • Authoring dangerous goods regulatory training material and developing validation rules for the automated acceptance of dangerous cargo shipments by other transport modes.
  • Developing and enhancing current training provision and updating training materials. Undertake training sessions as required.
  • Supporting consultancy responses on IMDG, ADR and DGSA based queries.
  • Responding to customer queries on dangerous goods regulations on how they are implemented in our software solutions.
  • Producing guidance on DG issues including content for regular social media posts and industry newsletters.
  • Assisting with the development of the Remote Container inspection programme, which may involve conducting ad-hoc remote inspections (full training provided).
  • Supporting Software Development team with ad-hoc validation ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Representing NCB Hazcheck at dangerous goods events, networking opportunities and online forums.

Role requirements: 

Essential: 

  • Transportation of dangerous goods certification, or equivalent experience: The applicant should be qualified (such as DGSA), and/or have a significant good working knowledge of the transportation of dangerous goods, functions and responsibilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of Regulations: A thorough understanding of the IMDG Code and ADR regulations.
  • Experience in delivery of training and development of educational materials.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for liaising with stakeholders, providing guidance on compliance issues, and effectively communicating changes in regulations.
  • Capability to analyze complex regulatory requirements and apply them to real-world scenarios, ensuring compliance and safety in all aspects of dangerous goods handling.
  • Given the critical nature of handling dangerous goods, attention to detail is crucial to ensure accuracy in documentation, labeling, and compliance with regulations.
  • The ability to identify and resolve compliance issues, address safety concerns, and provide practical solutions to ensure the safe transport and handling of dangerous goods.
  • Working effectively within a team environment, collaborating with colleagues in software development, regulatory compliance, sales, and other relevant departments to ensure a holistic approach to dangerous goods safety.

 Desirable: 

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science), or equivalent experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of Regulations: A thorough understanding of the multimodal regulations for the transport of dangerous goods with over 5 years’ experience to back this up.
  • Experience in consultancy related to dangerous goods safety.
