IMDG training: frequently asked questions

Is IMDG training mandatory?

Yes. Chapter 1.3 of the IMDG Code requires shore-side personnel whose work involves dangerous goods transported by sea to be trained in line with their responsibilities. Training must cover general awareness, function-specific duties and safety, and the employer must keep records of it.

Who needs IMDG training?

Anyone ashore who classifies, packs, marks, labels, documents, books, loads or handles dangerous goods for sea transport. That includes shippers, freight forwarders, packers and warehouse staff, booking and customer service teams, terminal and stevedoring staff, and shipping line operations.

Which IMDG course do I need?

It depends on your role. Office and booking staff usually take the IMDG Code Standard Course; shippers, forwarders and compliance managers the Consignor / Freight Forwarder Course; packers and warehouse staff the Packer / Cargo Handler Course; and dangerous goods managers the IMDG Code Advanced Course. Anyone already trained who needs to keep up to date can take the IMDG Code Refresher Course.

How often is IMDG refresher training needed?

The IMDG Code requires training to be supplemented periodically with refresher training to take account of changes in the regulations, such as each new amendment. In the United States, 49 CFR requires hazmat employees to be retrained at least every three years.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Every course ends with an assessment, and you receive a personalised course completion certificate when you pass. Keep it with your training records.

Are the courses up to date with the latest IMDG Code amendment?

Yes. The courses are revised for each new amendment of the IMDG Code, so your training reflects the regulations in force.

Can we train a whole team or use our own learning system?

Yes. The courses are used by 6 of the top 10 container shipping lines for their global training programmes, and are available as SCORM 1.2 packages for your own learning management system. Classroom and webinar training can also be arranged. Contact us to discuss your team.
