How We Got Here

When National Cargo Bureau was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1952, our efforts supported the United States Coast Guard in advancing safety in maritime commerce and helping prevent dangerous incidents at sea. Our creation was closely aligned with the United States’ responsibilities under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

That foundation led to NCB as an independent technical authority trusted for its profound industry expertise and reliability. “Safety of life and cargo at sea” explained this simply and effectively.

More than seven decades later, our founding principles remain unchanged, but the environment and our scope have transformed. Safeguarding Life and Cargo through Safer, Smarter Supply Chains better describes our work and impact today.

From Sea to Supply Chains

Cargo now moves through highly interconnected and complex global networks. Documentation is increasingly digital. Regulations are evolving. Risks are no longer isolated to a vessel or a port. They emerge across declaration, screening, inspection, and compliance workflows throughout the supply chain.
